Seemingly overnight, the situation in Australia has changed again. This prayer was posted on the Benedictine Abbey’s (Jamberoo) Facebook page as they awoke into lockdown yesterday.

Hello All,
Attached is the worship guide and reflection from Sunday. Our worship included a prayer of lament – something I sensed would be a welcome offering as we continue to experience the pain of the pandemic.
In Peace,
Christine

Rev Dr Barbara Holmes is an author, activist and academic living in the Midwest of the Uniting States. She spoke recently about the calling of the church in these times.

This week is Refugee Week in Australia. As we know from experience at St. Andrew’s, those who are more recent arrivals to Australia – refugees and others – are effected by the pandemic in unique ways. Some are not eligible for government support. For others, the programs or promises made before they came to Australia were delayed because of COVID or changed completely. Many work in casual or insecure positions. And all feel intensely the separation from family and their country of origin at this time.
I pray we will continue to open our hearts to and befriend those in our midst who come from other lands and, this week, may we pray for refugees and those seeking asylum in particular.
Attached is a two-page offering from the Refugee Council of Australia addressing several common myths about refugees. I commend this document to you.
In Peace,
Christine

Sunday’s Gospel reading invited us to find ways to abide in Christ, to gaze with him on the storms of anxiety and fear so they can be calmed by his peace and love. Seraphim of Sarov is a saint in the Eastern Church who reminds us that our peace has missional potential. It makes a difference in the world.
May you rest in God and abide in Christ today.
In Peace,
Christine

Today is winter solstice here in the Southern Hemisphere. And to observe this short day, a reflection by poet priest and one time prison chaplain Edward Hayes. I particularly like the line, “In the heart of every person on this Earth burns sparks of luminous goodness; in no heart is there total darkness.”
In Peace,
Christine
