A poem from St. John of the Cross who knew suffering intimately. The poetic language of the mystics can sound unusual to our ears, but they speak out of a lived experience of God that may be welcome in our day.

Tuesday 21 December

Today is summer solstice in the southern hemisphere. In the week we celebrate the birth of Jesus, the Light of the World, we experience the longest day of the year. Priest and author Edward Hays says about this day:

We are children of the sun, the daystar that makes all life possible, as we travel in the icy darkness of frozen space. It is only fitting that we celebrate this turning point of our planet.

Worship Guide for 25 July 2021

Dear Friends,

As we’ve heard politicians say, “We’ve been here before. We know how to do it.” I trust the same applies to our worship in lockdown. I’ve attached a prayer guide for you to use at home.

Amidst the days of enforced quiet, I encourage each of us to make time to observe an intentional Sabbath this weekend and commend the attached resource for you. The stillness of Sabbath invites us to turn towards the Source of Life with full attention, to notice the goodness woven through our past into the presence, to give thanks and to be renewed with hope for the future.

May this be your experience as you give yourself to prayer.

Peace,

Christine

Unceasing Prayer

Hello all,

We did not confirm a date for our next gathering but I assume it is safe to keep the first Monday of the month as our usual time for this year. This means we’ll meet on Monday 2 August beginning at 2:00 pm.

I thought we might look at the topic of prayer – specifically what a prayerful life might look like.

Drawing on the Divine Hours in the Christian tradition, we will explore ways to weave pause, interruption, attentiveness and intention into our day to move from simply “saying prayers” to living them. Along the way, we’ll entertain questions such as: What might prayer look like if we do not believe in an interventionist God? How can prayer be personal when the divine is intangible spirit?

This will be an interactive session and we’ll assemble a contemplative prayer book for you to take with you.

Feel free to pass this invitation on to a friend. New participants are always welcome.

Peace,

Christine
