As part of our NAIDOC week observation, we offered a prayer of thanks for the contributions of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people last night at the Mary’s community meal. Mid-way through, I was distressed to hear someone interject a racist comment during one of the communal responses in the prayer. Later, I found his prayer crumpled up on the table. I would like to say I addressed this situation in a wise and courageous way, but I did not… not this time anyway.
May we take heart from artist Betty Muffler who lives on the APY lands. She speaks of the nuclear testing that happened there, destroying land and killing members of her family. Her paintings express her deep desire for healing.
In Peace,
Christine
